Takekiri-eshiki will be held on June 20 at Kurama-dera Temple located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi. The Kurama-dera Temple is said to be founded by the monk Gantei in 770. Takekiri-eshiki is one of the oldest events in Kyoto. Four 2-men dressed as warrior priests teams(both teams represent different farming areas) compete in the ceremonial ritual of cutting a long piece of bamboo representing huge serpents. The ritual is based on an ancient legend in which a monk of the temple got rid of a giant snake. The winning bamboo cutting team is said to be assured of a good harvest this year.
