Japan asks for partial retraction of U.N. report on wartime brothels- Kyodo
2014-10-16 Thu 13:55
Japan has requested the author of a U.N. report on "comfort women" to retract part of the content that Tokyo sees as false, after a major Japanese daily admitted to false reporting on the controversial issue, the top government spokesman said Thursday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said, however, that Radhika Coomaraswamy, a Sri Lankan lawyer who compiled the report in 1996, rejected Tokyo's request.

The report compiled by Coomaraswamy, then special rapporteur on violence against women, described the mostly Asian women who provided sex at brothels for the wartime Japanese military as "sex slaves," urging Tokyo to apologize and pay compensation.

Chinese Authorities Pledge Rare Subsidies Following Mongolian Herder Protest-RFA
2014-10-16 Thu 05:43
Authorities have agreed to grant rare economic concessions to ethnic Mongolian herders after hundreds of protesters took to the streets in northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region last week calling for protection of their traditional livelihood, a U.S.-based rights group said Wednesday.

Around 400 Mongolian herders protested in Huvuut-shar Banner (in Chinese, Xianghuang Qi) on Oct. 8, carrying placards railing against competition from Chinese government and corporate monopolies, according to the Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Center (SMHRIC).

The group of protesters demonstrated peacefully in the banner —the administrative equivalent of a county— and delivered a petition listing their grievances to authorities, who quickly arranged a meeting between herder representatives, and the local governor and ruling Chinese Communist Party secretary, fearing further unrest, the U.S.-based SMHRIC said.

Stock market scare as Dow drops 460 points-CNN

The Dow plunged as much as 460 points Wednesday afternoon before pulling back a bit, although a 173 point loss isn't anything to cheer.

There wasn't an obvious trigger.

Ebola and Europe's sour economy are clearly worrying.

Earnings have been so-so, and retail sales data out this morning was disappointing.

China urges Britain not to send wrong signals on HK (Xinhua)
2014-10-16 Thu 04:12
China on Wednesday again urged Britain to immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs.

"We have repeatedly stated that Hong Kong's affairs fall within China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular press briefing.

Hong's remarks were in response to a written statement to the British parliament on recent events in Hong Kong, which was submitted on Monday by Hugo Swire, a minister of state with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government.

"No country or individual has a right to interfere in China's internal affairs," Hong said, adding that Hong Kong's political reform should be implemented in line with the Basic Law and the decision of the National People's Congress Standing Committee's (NPCSC).

The NPCSC has decided that the election of a chief executive for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in 2017 shall be implemented by universal suffrage.

Hong urged the British side to speak and act cautiously and not send any wrong signals.
