Chinese fishing boat sinks off Senkaku Islands

An unidentified number of Chinese fishermen are missing after a boat sank in waters to the north of the Senkaku Islands at around 8:50 a.m. Friday, according to a source with the Chinese Navy.

The cause of the accident is yet to be known.

Two Chinese naval rescue vessels are heading to the scene.

Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have prayed for young victims of a ship sinking during World War Two at a monument in Okinawa Prefecture.

The Tsushima Maru sank on August 22nd, 1944, in an attack by a US submarine. The ship was evacuating children from Okinawa to Kyushu, one of Japan's four main islands. Nearly 1,500 people were killed, including 780 elementary school children.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the incident.
