China’s data becoming ‘realistic’
2014-02-19 Wed 15:24
The gap in reported economic output between China’s provinces and national statistics narrowed for the first time in six years as Communist Party leaders vowed to reduce the focus on growth in evaluating local officials, Bloomberg News say.

The combined nominal economic output of the 31 provinces expanded about 9.2 percent in 2013 to 62.9 trillion yuan ($10.4 trillion), according to data reported by local governments since December and compiled by Bloomberg News.

That exceeded the national figure by 6.06 trillion yuan, or 10.7 percent, after an 11 percent margin in 2012.

The data suggest regional officials are heeding directives from President Xi Jinping and his team to shift their attention toward more sustainable expansion, including reducing debt and pollution.

Still, the excess of the provincial total over the national figure remains more than the size of Indonesia’s economy, pointing to the room for further improvements.

China rejects UN criticism in N Korea report
2014-02-19 Wed 08:06
China has rejected a United Nations demand that it stop repatriating North Korean defectors.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying referred on Tuesday to a new report by a UN commission studying human rights violations in North Korea.

The spokeswoman said Beijing cannot accept the criticism in the report, which was released on Monday.

She said China deals with illegal North Koreans appropriately, in accordance with international and domestic laws and humanitarian principles.

The UN report says people fleeing the North to China are refugees who are entitled to international protection.

It urges China to stop deporting them, saying that forcible repatriation is a violation of their human rights.

North Korean security chiefs and possibly even Mr Kim Jong Un, the leader of the country, should face international justice for ordering systematic torture, starvation and killings comparable to Nazi-era atrocities, UN investigators said,
