Japan begins tests to take out gas from seabed methane hydrate

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp has been drilling for a new energy source, methane hydrate, below the seabed at 1,000 meters depth about 70-80 km off the coast of the Atsumi Peninsula in the Philippine Sea since last year.

JOGMEC said on Tuesday a deep-sea drilling vessel called "Chikyu" has begun tests to extract gas from seabed methane hydrate.

The Chikyu arrived at the test site on Monday night for the world's first such tests.
