In 1889, the shrine was partially destroyed in a flood and so the remaining buildings were relocated at the present site. A huge flag drawn a black yatagarasu in a red circle stands at the entrance of the shrine. Yatagarasu, the three-legged crow, is a creature found in Japanese mythologies. It is the symbol of the Kumano area. The crow is believed in as a messenger of God in the area. The mythical crow appearing in the Japanese myth is regarded as a solar incarnation .
