The Kumano Kodo is an ancient road of faith for the pilgrimages to visit the sacred site "Kumano Sanzan." The road consists of the Ise-ji of Mie Prefecture,the Nakahe-ji, the Ohe-ji and the Kohe-ji. The Ohe-ji route followed the coast around the Kii Peninsula. The Nakahe-ji route was the most popular route used by pilgrimages from Kyoto and the Kohe-ji ran from Mt. Koya in Nara Prefecture to Hongu via Totsukawa in Nara Prefecture.
