The Itsukushima Jinja is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima(popularly known as Miyajima) in Hatsukaichi City , Hiroshima Prefecture ,Japan.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Itsukushima is also one of Japan's three scenic views, along with the sand bar Amanohashidate, and Matsushima Bay.
This shrine is the main shrine of all the Itsukushima shrines in Japan.
It enshrines three Megami(Goddess) , Ichikishima-Hime,Tagori-Hime and Tagitsu-Hime
According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko,in 593.
The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form around 1168.
In 1555, Mori Motonari defeated Sue Harukata at the Battle of Miyajima.
Later, the shrine buildings were repaired on a large scale by Motonari.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a large building, the Senjo-kaku, on a hill above the shrine.
