From Thursday, the Chinese authorities are due to ban smoking in most public buildings in Beijing.
The move is part of efforts to clean up the city in the run up to the Olympics.
Smoking is contributing to a rapid rise of cancer and heart disease in this country, where there are 350 million smokers.
But smoking is deep-rooted in Chinese culture and there is still a general lack of awareness about the impact on health.
