Sōryū class submarine
2008-03-16 Sun 00:00
Sōryū class is a new style submarine which is the first AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion), non-air dependence promotion, submarine in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force.
AIP allows a submarine to operate without the need to surface or use a snorkel to access atmospheric oxygen. allowing it to stay submereged for longer periods of time.
It is said that Sōryū is an evolved form of the Oyashio class submarine.
In the performance side, it is greatly improving as compared with the conventional submarine.
Sōryū`s submerged displacement:,4,200t, is the world's largest class as a conventionally-powered submarine.
Although a hull is the same "cigar type" as the Oyashio class, X rudders with high underwater motility are used for Sōryū.
The Sōryū is equipped with the AC generator and the un-penetrating type periscope.
It also has equipped C2T(Command and Control Terminal).
The Sōryū`s sonar system is the same as the Oyashio class SS,
Speed of Sōryū is 13 knots (24 km/h) surfaced and 20 knots (37 km/h) submerged .
